Key things

  • Intel APO increases FPS by optimizing processors for specific games.
  • The app only works on specific Intel processors, with support for other processors promised.
  • Intel regularly adds more games to the app list.

Graphics card manufacturers provide optimizations for popular games to make them run better on your system, so why don’t CPU vendors do the same? As it turns out, some do – Intel now provides direct optimization through its new Intel APO tool.

What is Intel APO?

Intel

Intel Application Optimization (APO) is a program that increases the frame rate in games by optimizing the performance of Intel processors. It’s not overclocking; instead, Intel APO tunes how the CPU schedules threads, similar to how Nvidia optimizes its GPUs for performance in specific titles. This helps remove obstacles and meet the unique requirements of certain games.

However, Intel APO does not replace your other graphics software and drivers because it only manages the CPU. This means Intel APO still works whether you’re using integrated graphics for onboard gaming, have customized graphics settings with GeForce Experience, or tweaked AMD Radeon settings for gaming performance.

Intel APO will not conflict with CPU overclocking or graphics settings and is intended to work with them to provide increased performance. The only real requirement is that you have an Intel processor that supports Intel APO.

Which CPUs can use Intel APO?

The problem is that not all Intel users can take advantage of this FPS increase. Currently, Intel APO works best with the most powerful Intel processors, including the newly named Intel Core Ultra series.

These processors currently support Intel APO:

Supported desktop processors

Supported laptop processors

  • Intel Core Ultra 9 285K
  • Intel Core Ultra 7 265K
  • Intel Core Ultra 7 265KF
  • Intel Core i9-14900KS
  • Intel Core i9-14900K
  • Intel Core i9-14900KF
  • Intel Core i7-14700K
  • Intel Core i7-14700KF
  • Intel Core i9-14900HX
  • Intel Core i7-14700HX

Even if you find your processor listed, it’s not plug-and-play. You will need to enable some hardware features before installing the app.

To run Intel APO on Windows, follow these steps:

  1. Enable Intel Dynamic Tuning Technology (DTT) in BIOS/UEFI. This setting may not be available depending on your motherboard.
  2. Install the DTT driver provided by your motherboard manufacturer.
  3. Download and install Intel APO via the Microsoft Store.

For those who don’t yet have a reason to upgrade to an Intel 14th Gen CPU, there’s still hope on the horizon. Support for additional processors is in the works, namely for 13th and 12th generation Intel processors along with Core Ultra 5 and Core i5 variants.

If you have one of these older processors, you can still beta-test how Intel APO performs with your games. After installing the app, activate “Advanced Mode” in the user interface to get started. Be aware, however, that early reports show mixed results for processors with limited support.

What Games Can Intel APO Boost?

You will only see the performance increase for specific games directly supported by Intel APO. It’s also worth noting that the available games may vary depending on your computer configuration.

Intel APO currently provides optimizations for more than 20 titles, including Cyberpunk 2077, Counter-Strike 2, and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege. The list is likely to change as Intel updates the app to support more titles, so you should visit the Intel APO website for an up-to-date list of supported games.

When you first run Intel APO, it analyzes your hardware and installed games to show you what is supported and what percentage of FPS increase you can expect. You can leave Intel APO on by default for all games. But if you’re worried about it causing unexpected slowdowns, you can also set the tool to run only on specific titles.

Ultimately, the FPS gains you get will be modest in most cases. But every little bit can help you experience a smoother game – especially if you’re hovering around 60 FPS in an intense racing game like Dirt 5.

Intel is actively working to expand the number of supported titles as it tries to compete with AMD for the crown of best gaming CPU. If you don’t see your processor and games listed now, check to see if they have been added in future updates.
