Baldur’s Gate 3 allows the player to explore the world as either their own custom character or one of several Origin characters. Besides the six that players can either play as or recruit as companions, there is another, the Dark Urge. This character can be customized to fit the player’s playstyle at the start of the game, but it also has many dark choices and encounters the player will face.

Baldur’s Gate 3: Best Halberds, Ranked

Visually impressive, lethal, and effective, halberds are deadly weapons in Baldur’s Gate 3 and trusty allies to those skilled enough to wield them.

Unlike with a regular character, players will sometimes get choices with great repercussions when playing the Dark Urge, which may be a little extreme. With that in mind, these are the choices a player should avoid while playing the Dark Urge in Baldur’s Gate 3 if they wish to step away from their evil streak.

Updated on March 8, 2024, by Megan Smith: With Baldur’s Gate 3 being out for 7 months now, many players have already completed BG3 once or twice with a custom character. Now, players may instead be using different origin choices, with one of the most tempting being Dark Urge. Playing a character with a dark mind means players should consider BG3’s Dark Urge choices if they hope to receive a happy ending with this usually violent character. This includes what to do with the Dark Urge Alfira choice and much more throughout all three acts of the game. It is possible for a player to resist their urges and there are plenty of options a player should avoid in order to do this.

There are Dark Urge storyline spoilers for Baldur’s Gate 3 inside this article. These include plot points and the end of the game.

10 Do Not Submit To Being A Bhaalspawn

Act Three – Fighting Orin

During the third and final act of the game, players who have decided to control the dark urge and have resisted the pull of evil that lives deep inside them will want to make a specific choice by the time they get to defeat Orin in the Bhaal Sanctum.

After killing Orin, players will be given the option from Bhaal to submit to their evil blood and become his chosen, which spells the end of the world. Doing this will not only anger some of the player’s party but also ruin all the work done by the player to avoid becoming a horrible person. Players who want to stay on the good side of history should deny their dark father till the end.

  • After the fight with Orin, players should pick the choices that refuse Bhaal to avoid being his chosen.

9 Saving The World After Being Evil

A Bad Epilogue Ending

Some players may decide that they wish to give in to their dark urges instead of resisting them. If this is the case for the player, there are still some choices that they should avoid if they want what’s best for their dark urge character. At the very end of the game, the player is given the choice of saving the world by forcing the Elder Brain to destroy itself or take control of it.

If a player has accepted being Bhaal’s Chosen, then they should control the brain and avoid getting the epilogue party. This is because Bhaal will punish such a failure and cause even the evil dark urge to become a bloodthirsty monster that doesn’t have a happy ending at the party.

  • At the end of the game, after the Elder Brain is first defeated, players should avoid saving the world if they have accepted being Bhaal’s Chosen.

8 Don’t Murder/Torture Defenseless People

Tieflings And Even Goblins

While this may at first seem obvious, players who are looking to keep friends while still being the Dark Urge should choose their moments of violence carefully. Yes, it may be fun to force choke a group of Goblins to befriend the followers of the Absolute, but breaking the legs of an already paralyzed Tiefling in Act One is just cruel.

Every Race In Baldur’s Gate 3, Ranked

Every playable race in Baldur’s Gate 3 has unique attributes that can cement them as the best choice going forward.

That is, however, part of the fun when playing the Dark Urge, as players may feel that this character is their best excuse for an evil run. Though sometimes making enemies can make completing each act more of a challenge than it needs to be.

  • Avoid brutal options that are usually in italics to not do horrible things to people, this can happen in all three acts.

7 Do Not Fantasize About Horrible Things

Act 1 — Meeting Gale

As the Dark Urge, the player is likely to have countless bloody fantasies that swirl around their head during every encounter with both a regular NPC and a possible companion. This can start very early in the players’ adventure as they encounter Gale trapped within a portal.

A new dialogue option appears for the Dark Urge that has them fantasizing about hacking off Gale’s hand. However, after choosing this option, players will quickly realize it did not stay as a fantasy. Through the screams of Gale and the severed hand left on the ground, players won’t see Gale again but are left with this ‘trinket’ to remember him by.

  • When approaching the purple portal in Act 1, players should not press the option of fantasizing about cutting off the hand.

6 Talking To Animals Without Speak To Animals

Act 1 — Roaming Near The Emerald Grove

Animal lovers beware of the Dark Urge, as it appears to have something greatly cruel against animals. While many of the fluffy critters the player encounters give players the freedom to either do something horrible or to hold their tongue.

Approaching this adorable squirrel in Act 1 that goes by the name of Timber, without casting Speak With Animals, it will automatically see the player kick her into the tree. With no warning of this happening, a player is likely to be shocked and sickened by themselves, while the Dark Urge looks around confused at what they have just done.

  • When seeing the squirrel in Act 1 of the Emerald Grove, players shouldn’t approach it unless they have Speak With Animals on.

5 Admitting To The Player’s Bad Deeds

Act 1 — A Camp Moment

While at first, it may seem like a good idea to admit to the player’s party members that they may have accidentally killed the bard, Volo, they allowed to stay at the camp or tell them about the dark evil thoughts that litter their head, sometimes it’s better to hide the bad things and act like nothing is wrong.

Best Alternative Classes For Each Companion In Baldur’s Gate 3

Whilst the best companions in Baldur’s Gate 3 have strength in their original classes, these alternatives provide the best outcome.

Players will be saving their approval with the whole camp by simply denying they had any involvement with the body that may or may not be on the ground. It may even be an even better idea to hide the body, so the companions are none the wiser. Coming clean may clear a player’s conscience, but everyone will hate them for it.

  • After killing Alfira or the Dragonborn Bard, players should make sure to clean up the evidence and hide that they did it to avoid disapproval.
    Do not
    blame Astarion.

4 Encouraging The Death Of A Child

Act 1 — ‘Save Arabella’

Few games allow players to harm children and while the Dark Urge can’t literally kill a child, they can encourage a snake to do it for them. When first meeting Kagha in the Druid Grove, players will see her arguing with another Druid about what to do with a small Tiefling girl.

Witnessing this display, the Dark Urge realizes how dangerous the snake is and decides to encourage it to attack the girl. This will kill Arabella instantly, upsetting her parents, and causing the player to miss out on future scenes that involve Arabella.

  • When entering the Druid’s lair in the Emerald Grove, the player should be helping to free the child without making her run away.

3 Murdering Isobel

Act 2 — ‘Kill The Kindly Cleric’

Isobel is the only person keeping the people safe inside the Last Light Inn. Without her cleric abilities, the people within the inn would be taken over by the Shadow Curse. When using an average custom character, players will find themselves easily helping Isobel and the people within the inn. However, the Dark Urge has different plans.

Meeting Isobel will fill them with rage as they want to randomly kill her. This is only further encouraged by the Dark Urge’s butler, who tasks them with Killing the ‘Kindly Cleric’. Players do not need to do every quest they are given and this is one to definitely avoid if the player wants to keep the people inside the inn safe.

  • Any time the aerator gives the option to kill or attack Isobel, players should avoid it.

2 Completing The Murder Tribunal

Act 3 — ‘Investigate The Murders’

Once reaching the third and final act of the game, players may start to understand who the Dark Urge is. While helping to investigate the murders that have been happening around the city, they will finally encounter the Murder Tribunal; an event the Dark Urge seems to enjoy.

Baldur’s Gate 3: Characters That Should’ve Been Romanceable (But Aren’t)

These characters should’ve been romanceable in Baldur’s Gate 3.

If players manage to recruit Jaheira in Act 2 as the Dark Urge, agreeing to take part in the Murder Tribunal and then going through with it and therefore becoming a follower of Bhaal will cause this elf that players may remember from past games in the franchise to permanently leave the player’s party. This then also has the chance to cause Minsc to leave later on too.

  • When inside the Murder Tribunal, players have to refuse to kill the Hollyphant and attack Sarevok instead.

1 Controlling The Brain

Act 3 — Control The Elder Brain

Players who have resisted the dark urges of their character may feel the temptation to become all-powerful at the end of Baldur’s Gate 3. However, this is not the right ending for a player who has been resisting the urge to murder the innocent.

While it may be tempting to control the brain, as mentioned, this can lead to an arguably worse ending, especially as the player won’t be having any exciting party where everyone meets each other again after 6 months of being apart.

  • Players who have chosen to resist their murderous father should choose to save the world at the end of the game for the best ending.
