Design and unboxing
Getting up and running with the Dreame X40 Ultra was super easy and fast, by far the fastest setup of any robot vacuum I’ve tested.
After removing the main base station from the box, you remove the robotic vacuum cleaner itself, snap on the mop pads and plug in the base station. Then remove the clean water tank and fill it. Finally, add the included detergent to your own tank. You will be ready to go.
One of my gripes with the X40 Ultra was the size of the base station. It is nearly two feet tall and 13 inches wide. Make sure you have a large enough space in your home to fit it.
While the base station is larger than other options, the clean and dirty water holds more than a gallon of liquid, which should help extend the time between refilling or emptying these containers.
The base also washes and dries the mop pads to help repel odors and bacteria. As another plus that I’ve never seen on other models, the base station can also automatically clean the washboard, where dirt and mud sometimes accumulates after cleaning the mop pads. With other vacuum/mop combinations, you have to keep this area clean by hand every week or two.
The detergent container and vacuum bag are accessible by removing the panel from the bottom of the base station. I didn’t bother with it because it’s not an area you’ll be accessing regularly.
Both the vacuum and base station are well built and seem very sturdy, something I’d like to see in something as expensive as the X40 Ultra. The mostly black vacuum cleaner and base station have gold accents that look nice and shouldn’t stand out in the home.
After downloading the accompanying Dreamehome app for iPhone or Android, you’ll go through a quick setup process, including connecting to your home Wi-Fi. The final part of the setup process is to complete the mapping of your home. You will need to ensure that all doors to the rooms are open and accessible and that most large obstacles are captured. While running, the vacuum uses its LiDAR sensor to create a map.
It took less than 10 minutes for the vacuum to go through the mapping and provide a complete map of my home and even automatically adapt it to different rooms. You can also use the app to further customize the map by editing rooms and adding features like a restricted zone.
A vacuum cleaner that quickly processes almost anything
When looking at a robot vacuum and mop combination, I always like to look at both parts of the cleaning equation separately before seeing how the solution works together. The vacuum in the X40 Ultra has a massive 12,000 Pa suction, one of the highest ratings on the market. And it certainly lived up to it.
With two dogs and a couple of teenagers, my floors are constantly dirty. I have mostly hard floors throughout the house, some carpeting, and a small piece of carpeting in the closet. My floor seems to attract dirt, dust, dog hair and anything else you can imagine on a daily basis.
After a few passes, the X40 Ultra handled everything quickly. I was surprised at how much the vacuum was able to pick up, even in areas where previous robot vacuums missed. One of the main reasons is the lifting and extending side brush. Most robot vacuum cleaners have a side brush, but it extends only a little from the circular vacuum cleaner.
The Dreame option can extend much further to handle any right-angled corner. The corners of my house usually contain a mixture of dust and dog hair. When the X40 Ultra got into a corner, the brush slipped out and grabbed the dirt for the vacuum to take care of. It also did a great job on my furniture legs, another sore spot with other vacuums.
There is a setting in the app that ensures that the side brush extends as far as possible each time you vacuum. This will affect battery life, but it’s worth it to me.
In addition to a short work with the daily mess on the floor, I also tried a mixture of different dirt such as cereals and rice to see how the vacuum performs on hard surfaces and carpets, and it exceeded my expectations with 100% coverage of all dirt. debris.
At maximum suction level, the noise from the X40 Ultra was no more noticeable than other models I tested.
Retractable mop pads cope with difficult places
The Mop X40 Ultra is another winner. As with the side brush, the dual mop pads can be extended from the robot body to keep your floor cleaner. You can also adjust its settings to better clean low-hanging areas like the bottom of the refrigerator.
I was very happy with the mop, especially in a number of areas that other robots couldn’t touch, especially right under sofas and other furniture.
Even when the mop pads weren’t extended, the mop did a good job of cleaning stubborn stains like milk powder or soy sauce. During some cleaning modes, you can turn on the Stain Detection function, which will perform intensive mopping when specific stains are detected.
After mopping is complete, the mop pads can be washed in hot water – up to 158 degrees Fahrenheit.
Especially if you have a lot of carpeting in your home, mop pads can sometimes cause wet areas when the robot switches modes. On the X40 Ultra, the mop pads automatically raise about half an inch when carpet is detected. But even more impressive is that if you set the cleaning to vacuum only, the robot will disconnect the mop pads in the dock.
At work, the robot uses AI to avoid obstacles on the floor such as socks, dirty clothes and dog toys. This worked very well. I’ve been using the robot for over a month and it hasn’t hung up once, even with a number of objects on the floor.
Lots of features in a great app
As a pet owner, I find robotic vacuums/mops especially useful for dealing with the mess of dirt and hair that my beagles seem to always bring. The companion app includes several features for pets.
You can choose to have the robot proceed more carefully when avoiding obstacles and perform a smarter cleaning strategy around pet furniture. A smart strategy will deep clean the pet or kitty bowl and avoid pee pads.
I liked that the app offers a wide range of features. Most importantly, there are two main ways to clean your home. Along with a custom option where you can adjust settings like suction power, CleanGenius worked very well in my testing. This will intelligently change cleaning modes and functions to suit the room and degree of soiling.
This app is also where you can use X40 Ultra live video camera. You can use the app to pilot the robot to another part of your home for added security. One of the nicer features is the navigation feature, which lets you see more places the robot can go instead of having to pilot it around your house. It obviously won’t replace a real home security camera, but it’s nice to have in an emergency. I’ve used this a few times to make sure my dogs don’t get into any trouble unsupervised.
Should you buy the Dreame X40 Ultra?
The most obvious problem with the Dreame X40 Ultra is its $1,600 price tag. While it provided the best mop and vacuum of any robot I’ve used, it comes at a high price.
If you have the cash, the Dreame technology does everything and more it promises. Extendable mop pads and side brush along with massive suction power and other great features are worth it.
The good news for anyone who doesn’t want to spend that much on a robot is that you can easily find units for half the price that can keep your floors clean almost as well. But if you want the best, Dreame has you covered.
