Fallout 4 is already a pretty great survival game, but there are some awesome mods that can take your experience to the next level.

Players start as primitive humans who could eventually be flying a helicopter or building bridges. Rust is a fight-or-flight type of game where survival is by any means necessary. Make alliances or prepare for battle; the choice is up to the player. There’s a reason why this game is such a massive hit: allowing players to form meaningful in-game stories as they try to negotiate with survivors and scrounge up as many weapons and supplies as possible.

Updated on March 2, 2024, by Ritwik Mitra: Rust is one of the most unique survival games that players can check out for themselves. Regardless, it was only a matter of time before a sequel would be greenlit and released, and Subnautica: Below Zero ended up being a worthy continuation of the series’ legacy. The emphasis on the game’s narrative was a step above its predecessor, and most fans appreciated this ambitious approach despite a few flaws that reared their ugly heads throughout the game.

19 Rising World

A Down-To-Earth Survival Game In Early Access With All The Hallmarks Of The Genre

Rising World Bear Hunting

Rising World

Released
December 3, 2014

Developer(s)
JIW-Games

There’s still some work to be done, but Rising World is shaping up to be one hell of a game. It looks great and features an extensive crafting system that’s both realistic and intuitive. While the game shares more than a few similarities with Minecraft, it opts for a more realistic tone and art style, which is very reminiscent of Rust. It allows for a wide variety of play styles and can be either tense or relaxing depending on the choices that the player makes.

Whether the game will ever make it out of early access remains to be seen, but providing it continues on its current course, the sky really is the limit. Even in its current state, though, it’s well worth a look and is a great way to while away a few hours. Maybe even a few hundred.

18 Astroneer

A Laidback Space Adventure Game With Survival Elements

Astroneer - character approaching a rocket ship

Astroneer

Released
February 6, 2019

Developer
System Era Softworks

Its graphics may be a little simplistic for the current era, but the vibrant colors found throughout Astroneer make for some truly striking visuals that won’t be forgotten in a hurry. The same could also be said of the game’s melodious soundtrack, which will be stuck in players’ heads long after their rigs have been powered down.

Where the game stumbles a little is in its difficulty, or lack thereof, to be more precise. It’s not quite easy, but those hoping for a challenge will likely come away a little disappointed with what’s on offer. It also has a few technical issues that are yet to be ironed out. Those things aside, though, it’s a wonderful game that can be enjoyed either solo or with friends. The latter is definitely the best way to experience it, but both can be rewarding and relaxing in equal measure.
