Streaming services have changed the way we consume media, but having vast libraries of content at our fingertips has created new challenges. Artificial intelligence offers several solutions that help improve user experience, streamline functionality, and optimize engagement. Here’s why we need more AI in streaming entertainment:

Artificial intelligence offers you a better viewing/listening experience

do you ever feel deja vu while browsing your recommendations? Many platforms currently use our past behavior to formulate new suggestions that can be unpleasant. I remember once watching the Netflix series “Monster” and soon after my recommendations became alarmingly morbid. I ended up resetting my Netfix recommendations. To remedy this, AI deep learning models could not only analyze past behavior, but also use data from multiple smart devices in real time to make recommendations based on our current moods and preferences.

In addition, artificial intelligence can improve the audiovisual experience by optimizing the streaming quality based on the capabilities of our devices and internet speed. YouTube is one of the services currently using this technology, and for someone who lives in an area with inconsistent internet speeds, having the AI automatically adjust the quality in real-time to reduce buffering is a real coup.

Having a vast library of streaming content at your fingertips can be both a blessing and a curse. Artificial intelligence can alleviate frustration by helping to refine our searches using natural language processing, or NLP. NLP uses descriptive prompts that don’t rely on keywords to provide a wider range of suggestions based on our mood, tone or preferences. For example, you can say, “Show me something historical and funny,” and the algorithm obliges.

In addition, AI can analyze consumer patterns across a broad user base and create lists based on different demographics such as age groups, shared interests, and location. In the future, AI models could build on this by incorporating other behaviors such as our shopping trends and social media interactions to create a bigger picture of what we enjoy as individuals.

AI provides better accessibility features

The AI-driven translation is already highly accurate and constantly improving, helping a wider user base enjoy streaming services around the world. However, one of the most promising uses of AI is in accessibility features that allow differently-abled consumers to experience streaming content. Visually and hearing impaired users now benefit from automatic closed captions and audio descriptions that are generated in real-time and are less dependent on pre-generated scripts or delayed live captions.

AI is constantly evolving its accessibility features to improve the inclusivity of streaming entertainment. One possible application could be avatars that use machine learning to translate sign language in real time for the benefit of the deaf and hard of hearing community.

AI improves analysis and prediction

Analytics is the driving force behind streaming services, and AI can significantly improve analytics capabilities. It can monitor user engagement in real-time and mitigate risk by implementing retention strategies if numbers drop. Machine learning models can also predict user behavior and market trends, helping services make informed decisions about which shows to promote or delay. AI can also perform advanced A/B testing to help services understand what resonates with consumers and optimize their platforms to more closely match their needs.

Although artificial intelligence is sometimes seen as a disruptive and ominous development, it is a valuable tool that can greatly improve our interaction with technology. By incorporating AI, streaming services can improve display quality, efficiency, accessibility and discovery. It helps companies and consumers predict what we like, create playlists and recommendations, and analyze our behavior to provide better services. Like many of us, I have reservations about AI, but when it comes to streaming services, I believe it will help me get more bang for my buck.
