- Important female characters like Mara Jade and Jaina Solo have played pivotal roles in reforming the Jedi Council, ending galactic wars, and defeating powerful Sith, showing their strength and resilience in the Star Wars universe.
In much of Star Wars media, it is shown that male Jedi are more common than female. However, more recently, this has slowly been changing. Projects such as Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Ahsoka have aimed to put the spotlight on the most powerful women Jedi in the modern Star Wars universe.
The Strongest Jedi in Star Wars Video Games
The Jedi are some of the most powerful being in the Star Wars universe, and video games have let players take control of some of the strongest.
While some of the female Jedi introduced to the Star Wars Universe came in minor prequel roles or in The Clone Wars series, others are only a part of the Extended Universe or other media. Either way, there is great female representation in the franchise that many fans forget.
Updated on February 24th, 2024, by Chris Harkin:In 2023, Ahsoka managed to both solidify her own place among the ranks of the best female Jedi in her new show, and simultaneously add Sabine Wren to the ranks as well. In 2024, we’ll see a variety of new Star Wars TV projects added to Disney Plus, which may introduce more powerful women amongst the ranks of the Jedi, or perhaps shows like Tales of the Jedi will continue expanding the history and accomplishments of some powerful female warriors already on this list. Either way, the Star Wars saga will likely never stop delivering great new characters to shake up the most powerful lists for years to come, and therefore, this one needed to be updated to accomadate.
14 Jocasta Nu
Keeper Of Knowledge
-
First Appearance –
Star Wars: Attack of the Clones
(2002) - Gifted With Jedi Mind Tricks
- Owned A Lightsaber Rifle
Despite not often being seen in combat, Jocasta Nu was an incredibly wise female Jedi Master who was placed in charge of the archives at the Jedi Temple. This hugely important position could only be attained after many years of study, and Jocasta proved on multiple occasions that she had a lot of bravery in addition to knowledge.
When the Jedi Temple was attacked during Order 66, Jocasta initially managed to escape, which was hugely impressive given her location. She was later tracked down by Darth Vader personally and didn’t survive the ensuing battle, though she did manage to trouble Vader and his clones using her unusual lightsaber rifle.
13 Sabine Wren
Mandalorian, Vandal, Jedi
-
First Appearance –
Star Wars: Rebels Episode 1×01 (2014) - Gifted Artist & Bounty Hunter
- Explosives Expert
One of the characters who has been around for years, at least for fans of the animated Star Wars: Rebels series, Sabine Wren finally became a Jedi when she returned to her training under Ahsoka in their recent live-action series on Disney Plus. Sabine’s greatest accomplishments as a Jedi are likely still ahead of her.
But that doesn’t mean that Sabine didn’t accomplish great things prior to her official Jedi training in Ahsoka. During her time as part of the Ghost’s crew, she helped engage in various activities for the Rebel Alliance that proved key, while also playing a major role in the events and future of Mandalore throughout. Fans are expectantly waiting to see if she can also help Ahsoka, Ezra Bridger and more in taking Grand Admiral Thrawn down once and for all to boot.
12 Shaak Ti
Oversaw Clone Army Production
-

Star Wars: Attack of the Clones
(2002) - Gifted With Telekinesis
- Able To Use Echolocation
Shaak Ti appeared in the prequel films and in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. This important role showcased how much wisdom and trust the Jedi Council had in her.
9 Jedi We Want For Tales Of The Jedi Season 2
With Tales of the Jedi coming back for season 2, fans have made clear which iconic Star Wars Jedi deserve their own stories to be told.
Having survived the battles of Geonosis, Kamino, and Coruscant, Shaak Ti proved many times over that she was an expert Jedi, and she may even have survived the events of Order 66 had she not been stationed on Coruscant itself at the time. She was only finally slain by the hand of Darth Vader himself at the Jedi Temple.
11 Adi Gallia
Master Of Whispers
-
First Appearance –
Star Wars: The Phantom Menace
(1999) - Master Politician
- Ran A Covert Intelligence Network On Coruscant
The Jedi Council seemed to try during the High Republic Era to stay away from politics as much as possible, but the same couldn’t be said for every individual Jedi. Adi Gallia was born on Coruscant to a diplomatic family, and thus grew up being respected on both sides of the aisle. She was able to act as a bridge between the Jedi and the Senate on more than one occasion.
To ensure she knew what was going on with the politicians of Coruscant, Adi Gallia also fostered a huge network of spies that allowed her to keep tabs on everyone. During the Clone Wars, she stood alongside Obi-Wan Kenobi in more than one major battle, and even briefly tangled with General Grievous, showing she was a fierce warrior as well as a great diplomat.
10 Aayla Secura
Wartime General
-
First Appearance –
Star Wars
(1998) #19 - Incredible Martial Artist
- Master Of Form IV Of Lightsaber Combat
A Twi-lek female Jedi, Aayla Secura was also on the Council during the time of the Clone Wars and also failed to survive the extermination of almost all the Jedi during Order 66. Prior to this, however, she was a notable General in the Clone Wars, in addition to fighting in and surviving the Battle of Geonosis that began the war.
Aayla survived something that many Jedi don’t: the pull of the dark side. After the death of her uncle, Aayla nearly turned to the dark side during her hunt for those responsible, but with help from Master Yoda and by using her own inner strength and sense of morality, she managed to remain herself, proving herself as one of the strongest female Jedi.
9 Depa Billaba
Trained & Saved Kanan Jarrus
-
First Appearance –
Star Wars: The Phantom Menace
(1999) - Incredibly Gifted In Forms III & VII Of Lightsaber Combat
- Acute Force Control
Another female Jedi master who lived to see the final days of the Jedi Order, Depa Billaba was found as a force-sensitive child on the planet of Chalacta by none other than Jedi Master Mace Windu. Windu trained the youngling himself, teaching her the ways of the force and raising her as a future Jedi.
Billaba was already a member of the Jedi Council by the time The Phantom Menace took place, and she served as a Jedi General across various battles in The Clone Wars with her new Padawan all the way until Order 66. She sacrificed herself when her clone troopers turned on her to save her young Padawan, who went into hiding with the new name Kanan Jarrus.
8 Yaddle
In Charge Of Jedi Initiates
-
First Appearance –
Star Wars: The Phantom Menace
(1999) - A Member Of The Jedi Council
- Skilled In Deadly, Unknown Jedi Powers
One of the few other members of Yoda’s race ever seen in Star Wars, besides Grogu, Yaddle was on the Jedi Council during the High Republic era and was in charge of the Jedi initiates during that time. She was a quiet Jedi Master but had some stunning and surprising talents.
Morichro is a terrifying and little-known Jedi ability which allows the user to slow the body functions of their opponent until they die, and Yaddle was a master of it. She was a master of the Force in many ways, being attuned to it on a level few Jedi achieve, able to use it to ignore pain, change what people hear and even understanding completely how and where the Force was guiding her.
7 Luminara Unduli
Led Armies In The Clone Wars
-
First Appearance –
Star Wars: Attack of the Clones
(2002) - Few Able To Match Her Lightsaber Skills
- Skilled In Unarmed Combat
Luminara was a well-known member of the Jedi Council during the final days of the Order. She was in charge of the 41st Elite Corps of the clone army and was a frequent side character in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars series due to the prominent nature of her role in the war. Additionally, she had a very capable Padawan, Barriss Offee, who had a strong friendship with Ahsoka Tano.
Luminara stood toe-to-toe with Asajj Ventress during the war, helped Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker bring down Geonosis and the new droid foundry, and was finally killed after being taken into custody on Kashyyk during Order 66. Unfortunately, rumors were spread about her survival to lead other Jedi into traps using her remains.
6 Mara Jade
Helped Reform The Jedi Council
-
First Appearance –
Heir To The Empire
(1991) - Experienced Hacker & Pilot
- Gifted With Light & Dark Sides Of The Force
A character that fans may never see on screen, Mara Jade is no longer technically canon in the Star Wars Universe as far as is currently known. Mara Jade was a member of the Emperor’s Hand, a group of force-sensitive agents who performed the most difficult of missions for Palpatine himself. After the war, Mara became a smuggler and later met Luke Skywalker.
Star Wars: The Clone Wars – The 15 Best Arcs, Ranked
Many major events took place during Star Wars: Clone Wars but these story arcs stand out as favorites among fans.
After falling in love with Luke and marrying him, Mara Jade became a female Jedi Master under his tutelage and devoted herself to restoring peace in the galaxy. She survived for many years, having a son with Luke and training her niece, Jaina Solo, until she too became a Jedi Knight. Mara was eventually killed by her nephew, Jacen Solo, who turned to the dark side and became a Sith.
5 Leia Organa
Helped Lead The Galaxy In Every Universe
-
First Appearance –
Star Wars (1977) - Was A Rebel Alliance Leader Before A Jedi
- Became Powerful With The Force In Expanded & Canon Universes
Fans of the expanded universe of Star Wars content will know all about the many abilities and victories that Leia Organa achieved as she moved from Princess to General to Jedi. But even in the canon version of the Skywalker Saga, Leia still becomes powerful in the Force, as the daughter of Darth Vader.
She was trained by Luke as a Jedi to some degree following Return of the Jedi, as seen in The Rise of Skywalker. She was powerful enough to survive being blasted out of her ship and even used the Force to travel back to safety. Leia was also able to give sage advice and wise training in the Force to Rey, which was vital with seemingly no other Jedi left to do so after Luke’s death.
4 Jaina Solo
Ended The Second Galactic Civil War
-
First Appearance –
The Last Command
(1993) - One Of The Best Pilots In The Galaxy
- Incredibly Gifted Lightsaber Duelist
Another character who is no longer canon, Jaina Solo was a major figure in the Star Wars Legends Universe. One of the three children of Han Solo and Leia Organa, Jaina was raised as a Jedi from an early age and was instrumental in taking a stand against many major threats to the galaxy.
Jaina became the sword of the Jedi, later a Jedi Master, and even managed to end the Second Galactic Civil War when she faced her twin, Jacen Solo, after he became Darth Caedus and turned to the dark side. Jaina managed to defeat him, ending one of the most terrifying threats the galaxy had ever seen.
3 Ahsoka Tano
The Ultimate Survivor
- Able To Purify Lightsaber Crystals
- Incredible Raw Force Abilities
Ahsoka Tano has the rare distinction of still being alive in the modern Star Wars universe. Having first appeared in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Ahsoka was a Padawan learner to Anakin Skywalker and performed many amazing feats under his tutelage as part of the Clone Wars.
Ahsoka later left the Jedi Order, no longer believing in it after she was falsely blamed for an attack on the Jedi Temple. She faked her death after surviving Order 66 and went into exile as the Empire rose to power. Ahsoka’s recent television outings in her own show have brought her into both live-action and the mainstream universe, and with a hugely impressive set of powers on her side, there is no question that she will be significant in what happens next.
2 Nomi Sunrider
Led The Jedi Council
-
First Appearance –
Dark Horse Comics 7
(1993) - Huge Force Sensitivity
- Could Conjure Raw Light That Harmed Dark Force Users
Many other female Jedi have gone a long way and been strong members of the Jedi Council. However, it is much rarer for a woman to have led the council. Nomi Sunrider was the wife of a Jedi Knight and was made aware of her force-sensitive nature but did not think much about it until her husband was slain. Then, she picked up his lightsaber and began her own path.
Becoming a Jedi Knight while raising her child alone, Nomi completed many missions for the Order during the era of the Old Republic, including stopping the Naddist Revolt and the Freedon Nadd Uprising. She participated in the Great Sith War and helped bring an end to it by severing the fallen Jedi Ulic Qel-Droma from the force. After this, Sunrider continued to rise up the ranks of the Jedi Order until she became Grand Master.
1 Rey
Defeated Palpatine At Last
-
First Appearance –
Star Wars: The Force Awakens
(2015) - Incredible Force Healing Ability
- Intelligent Survivalist
Of all the female Jedi and all the powers that they are shown to have, it seems unlikely that any could have withstood the might of Emperor Palpatine or brought Kylo Ren back to the light. Rey managed both of these feats and more, and her survival through the sequel trilogy is something of a mythological feat in itself.
Channeling the power of all the Jedi, Rey defeated Palpatine and will now appear in her own future Star Wars film to continue building her legacy. Having brought balance to the force, Rey will now be able to bring the Jedi Order back to the Galaxy and may finally be able to bring about a permanent form of peace, though that may be impossible given the need for balance in the Star Wars universe.
