I wish these 7 sites and services had an annual overview

Spotify Wrapped-style annual summaries have spread across multiple apps, offering an overview of your activity over the past 12 months. However, some major tools still lack this feature, and I’d be absolutely thrilled if they implemented an annual summary.

With over two billion monthly active users, I’ve always been surprised that YouTube doesn’t have a yearly rounding feature. This is even more true when YouTube Music has a seasonal recap.

I use YouTube to learn more about various topics and have also used it in the past for sports highlights. Knowing what my viewing behavior was during the year would be very interesting in my opinion; browsing your watch history doesn’t have the same effect.

In addition to being curious about my annual YouTube viewing habits, I also find YouTube’s annual roundup really helpful. For example, if you’re trying to limit your content consumption or waste less time on social media, you can use these metrics to determine where you should be stricter.

2 Instagram

I don’t use Instagram nearly as much as I used to, but I’m still curious to see how I use the app in a year. When you look at your following list, you’ll see which accounts you’ve interacted with the most and the least, but this list isn’t just compiled over the course of a year.

For example, it would be fascinating to see the posts on the accounts that you liked the most. Additionally, it would be interesting for me to know what my most popular post and Reel was – along with the types of accounts I’m more likely to interact with.

Instagram is already my favorite social media site, but I’d rather see this implemented than features like Notes. The latter is one of the many ways social media apps become too bloated.

3 TV streaming services

We see a lot of music streaming services with annual summaries, with Spotify Wrapped being the most obvious. You can even view your old playlists wrapped in Spotify. I think it would be quite logical if a TV streaming service like Netflix or Disney+ introduced a similar feature.

Netflix’s annual summary would work similarly to Spotify’s. I would like it to show the genres you like the most along with the total hours watched. It would also be great to see how you rank against other users of the Services.

While many TV streaming services don’t have the same social features as Spotify, I also wonder how my stats compare to those of my friends. You can even find ways to increase your watch time the same way you can increase your listening hours and win Spotify Wrapped.

4 Todoist

Todoist is one of my favorite to-do list apps. It also has the most gamified interface, which is why I’m surprised you don’t have a yearly overview. At least not you anymore.

Todoist used to have an annual overview, but has since pulled the feature. As Doist CMO Brenna Loury said on X (Twitter), building these kinds of features requires significant resources. Developers also need to spend a lot of time creating these summaries.

When Todoist had its annual review, you could see how many tasks you had completed compared to other users. In addition, the app showed you the time of day when you ticked off the most tasks. The overview showed you how many tasks you completed on average per day, week and month.

I’d also like Todoist to bring back its feature that shows you how productive you’ve been at different times of the year. I don’t know if it would be possible, but it would be interesting to see which of your projects required the most tasks to check off.

5 Instant messaging app

Have you ever wondered who you message the most each year and when you are most active on WhatsApp, Messenger, iMessage or your app of choice? I have and I’m really wondering what my normal stats look like.

I would use logs similar to the ones from Todoist here. I would like to know who I got the most messages from and who I replied to the most. Also, it would be interesting to see what my messaging frequency was over the course of the year.

I’d also like to see when I’ve been most active on my messaging app. Like YouTube, this would be great for identifying trends and also working to reduce screen time if that was a problem. Email clients could do this too, and these insights could help reduce stress and build healthy email habits.

6 My banking app

I had to relearn all the good lessons I had learned about personal finance, and keeping track of how much I was spending was one of the most important factors. You can use budgeting apps that are cheaper than YNAB, but seeing a summary of expenses would be good for a lot of people’s spending literacy.

I’d like to know how much money I’ve spent in a year, and more importantly, this summary would show which categories you’ve spent the most on. The summary would also include which companies you were most loyal to.

Some banking apps, such as Revolut, offer an annual check. However, I only use Revolut for travel. As a result, I would love to see a similar feature included in my everyday banking app.

7 Concept

I probably use Notion more than any other app. It has tons of features to keep overwhelming to-do lists under control, and I also love how easy it is to write notes. The concept has its place in my daily work tasks, but it is also an excellent tool for organizing my personal life and planning my goals.

Since I use Notion for so many things, it would be great to see a yearly summary showing what I spent the most time on. I wonder how many new pages I’ve created, how many hours I’ve spent in Notion, and which desktops I’ve used the most.

It would also be great to see more specialized aspects, like which emoticons were my favorite. This would add nicely to Notion’s position as one of the best personal annual review apps.

Annual rounding has become commonplace, but many interesting applications still do not use it. Given that it requires a lot of data and resources, I’m not too surprised. However, I hope that more of my favorite tools will introduce annual summary features before long.
