The newest version of the leading virtual reality device was released last fall, and while some have already had to charge their Quest 3 controllers, many players will need to do so for the first time very soon. The Quest 3 once again offers incredible battery life, with most users saying their controllers last for over a month at a time.

While adding the ability to incorporate a player’s surroundings into their gaming experience through mixed-reality content, the Quest 3 offers players improved specs across the board. A better resolution, a snappier processor, and nearly twice as much maximum storage space make compelling arguments in favor of upgrading from the Quest 2.

With more VR headsets than ever to choose from, Game Rant helps break down the best of the best for every gamer’s needs.

For players new to the Quest VR set, making sure that the controllers stay charged is imperative to having fun. Gamers who own a Quest 2 are likely already familiar with how to recharge their VR controllers, but there are slight differences players may want to note. Those gamers are also likely aware that the Quest 3 controllers can’t exactly be charged right out of the box. However, that doesn’t mean it isn’t very easy to get Quest 3 controllers back in action.

There are two methods for recharging the Quest 3 controllers: replacing the AA battery or using the Oculus Quest 3 Charging Dock. Both are very similar, but using the charging dock is much more expensive than using rechargeable batteries, with the device being listed at over $100 through various retailers. The batteries these controllers ship with are alkaline and can’t be recharged, so players are strongly encouraged to purchase separate, rechargeable batteries to cut down on overall costs.

Steps for Using Rechargeable Batteries with Quest 3 Controllers

Step 1: Turn the controller over and push open the battery slot

Turning the controller upside-down so that the arrow-shaped eject symbol is facing up and the battery compartment can be pushed up easily, opening the battery slot. Be sure to check for dust or dirt, removing it from the controller’s battery slot to prevent damage over time.

Step 2: Replace the battery

If there is already a battery in the slot, remove it. Replace the AA battery with a rechargeable battery. If this is the first time the batteries are being changed, dispose of the alkaline battery that the Quest 3 came with. If this is not the first time changing the batteries, place the old rechargeable batteries back on their charger, so they can be ready to use again soon.

Step 3: Secure the battery slot cover

Opposite of the first step, align the battery cover with the slot, using the eject symbol as a guide. Slide the cover back over the battery slot until a click is heard. Repeat these steps for the other Quest controller.

It’s extremely easy to replace the batteries on the Quest 3 controllers. The only thing that players should really strive for is using rechargeable batteries. Not only is this a bit more environmentally conscious, but it’s also much more convenient and budget-friendly. A simple set of rechargeable batteries can fuel gamers with gaming mice, wireless controllers, and even household items without breaking the bank.

Steps for Using a Charging Dock with Quest 3 Controllers

Step 1: Turn the controller over and push open the battery slot

Just as with the battery method, using the Quest 3 charging dock to recharge the controllers means turning the device upside-down to remove the battery cover. An arrow-shaped eject symbol is etched into the controller, so users can be sure which way to slide the cover. Again, this is a good time to ensure the battery slot is clean and clear of any dust or dirt.

Step 2: Remove any batteries and insert the rechargeable batteries included with the dock

Remove the old battery. The alkaline battery the controllers originally came with should be disposed of, while rechargeable batteries should be put back on their chargers. Take the rechargeable battery that was included with the Quest 3 charging dock and insert it into the battery slot.

Step 3: Place the Oculus headset and controllers on the dock

Slide the battery cover back over the controller by lining it up with the battery slot. The controller and headset can now be placed on the Quest 3 charging dock to be recharged. When the charging dock LEDs turn orange, the controllers are charging. The LEDs will change to green once the controllers are fully charged.

The Quest 3 charging dock makes things extremely easy, as far as charging goes. The compact dock has a sleek design that makes the Quest 3 look great while it charges, keeping everything organized in the process. However, while it is compact and convenient, it may not be the best option for players who like to game for long periods and may prefer the ability to swap out batteries on the fly. It also has a much higher up-front cost that won’t be suitable for budget-minded gamers.
