Every Super Mario RPG, Ranked

For over 20 years, Mario RPGs have been a surprise gem for Nintendo fans. They balance the cartoonish world of Mario with JRPG gameplay.

The lack of any filler in this RPG, coupled with a wealth of content, makes it a fun experience that doesn’t overstay its welcome. The turn-based combat may be familiar to fans of Paper Mario, but the Final Fantasy-esque story is a treat all its own. It’s a must-play for any fan of the Mario IP who loves the many characters that have become iconic over the decades.

8 The Adventure Pals

A 2D Platformer With A Quirky Aesthetic

Fighting enemies in The Adventure Pals

The Adventure Pals

Released
April 3, 2018

Developer(s)
Massive Monster

Genre(s)
Platformer , Adventure , RPG

The Adventure Pals is a 2D platformer with a similar art style to Super Mario Bros. Wonder and an oddball sense of wonder too. The game stars a young boy, Wilton, who witnesses people around him get turned into hot dogs after an evil is unleashed. With the help of his wooden sword and giraffe stuffed inside of his trusty backpack, Wilton is on a quest to turn everyone back to normal.

This giraffe can help Wilton in a myriad of ways, like spinning its tongue around to allow players to glide while platforming. It’s a silly game in the vein of Adventure Time, brimming with charm, and it even has two-player co-op.

7 Cuphead

A Bullet-Hell Masterpiece With Tough-As-Nails Gameplay

Fighting a boss in Cuphead

Cuphead

Released
September 29, 2017

Developer(s)
Studio MDHR Entertainment Inc.

Genre(s)
Platformer

Cuphead is one of the hardest games on Switch, even with the helpful assists. It looks like a cartoon from the 1930s, which is impressive to this day, and it’s one of those games that one has to play to believe it isn’t just a cartoon.

While there are some traditional platforming levels with run and gun mechanics, Cuphead is more of a boss-rush type of experience. All of these bosses have several phases and no checkpoints in between. Thankfully, players can team up with a co-op partner to ease the tension level just a bit.

6 It Takes Two

One Of The Best Pure Co-op Games Ever Made

Playing a mini-game in It Takes Two

It Takes Two is a game that has to be played in co-op to work. The game centers on a couple with marital problems who get transformed into dolls after their child makes a wish. The game then becomes a series of mini-games and platforming segments wherein players have to work together to solve any puzzle presented to them.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder: How to Farm Purple Flower Coins Fast

Players that want to quickly earn Purple Flower Coins in Super Mario Bros. Wonder can find two great farming methods in this guide.

The developer, Hazelight Studios, had experimented with co-op-only experiences before this, like A Way Out, which involved two convicts breaking out of jail. However, It Takes Two took this co-op-centric concept to a whole other level, and Hazelight Studios was rewarded for its dedication, as the game was a critical and commercial success.

5 Kirby’s Return To Dream Land Deluxe

Four-Player Co-Op Elevates This Cute, Endearing Platformer To The Next Level

Sucking an enemy in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe

Kirby’s Return To Dreamland Deluxe

Released
February 24, 2023

Genre(s)
Platformer

Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe is one of the more obvious picks for Nintendo fans. Like Super Mario Bros. Wonder, this game features four-player co-op, but multiplayer is not necessary. It began on the Wii, and it just received this remaster earlier this year, complete with a bounty of additions.

It’s a fairly standard adventure with Kirby featuring his classic power-ups, from his sword getup to his bombing attire. It’s also a good co-op game for a younger or casual audience, as most Kirby titles do aim toward lesser-inclined players.

4 Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury

An Updated Version Of A Certified Mario Classic

Released

Developer(s)
Nintendo EPD

Genre(s)
Platformer

There are other multiplayer-based Mario games worth recommending beyond Super Mario Bros. Wonder. For Switch players, this enhanced port of a Wii U game is the one to check out. While it also has four-player Mario cooperative action, it’s a 2.5D game. This will give fans a different perspective to enjoy as they tour around the Mushroom Kingdom with Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad in Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury.

All four characters have special abilities, like Peach’s skill to glide short distances, which is a carryover from Super Mario Bros. 2. Then there is a separate mode in the game wherein Mario and Bowser Jr. can team up for a two-player adventure.

3 Mr. Sun’s Hatbox

A Roguelike Platformer With A Ton Of Heart And Fun 2-Player Co-Op

Fighting enemies in Mr. Sun's Hatbox

Mr. Sun’s Hatbox

Released
April 20, 2023

Developer(s)
Kenny Sun

Mr. Sun’s Hatbox was probably passed up by a lot of players when it launched earlier this year. However, it has all the makings of being one of the best hidden gems on Switch in 2023. The game stars the titular Mr. Sun, who loses his hatbox after it gets delivered.

There are seven entrances to the Special World in Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and this guide will help players find all of them.

Mr. Sun then sets up a sort of military operation within his store to facilitate the retrieval of his hatbox through new employees. It’s a roguelike game with elements of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker thrown into its design. Players can capture enemy units and items through balloons, for example. Best of all, there is a two-player co-op option.

2 Scott Pilgrim Vs The World: The Game

A Simple, Fun Beat-Em-Up With A Lot Of Heart

Fighting enemies in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World The Game

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game

Released
August 10, 2010

Genre(s)
Beat ‘Em Up

There are a lot of good modern brawlers to recommend on Switch, but Scott Pilgrim vs The World: The Game ranks among the best. It’s a good brawler for Super Mario Bros. Wonder fans because it references a lot of Mario games from the past. The brightly colored and animatic sprites also gel well next to the expressive characters in Mario’s latest adventure.

Finally, it’s a good time to recommend this game adaptation because a new Netflix anime based on the comics is coming out in November. Players can enjoy this brawler RPG experience alone or with three other friends in a chaotic love letter to Mario and many other older game franchises.

1 Yoshi’s Crafted World

A Beautiful Platformer That’s Easy To Get Into For Players Of All Ages

Riding Poochy in Yoshi's Crafted World

Yoshi’s Crafted World

Released
March 29, 2019

Developer(s)
Good-Feel

Genre(s)
Platformer

Yoshi’s Crafted World might be the most engaging game on Switch to look at. The watercolor aesthetics of Super Mario Bros. Wonder are great, but there is something so tactile about seeing Yoshi and the other characters move in this game. Everything and everyone is either made out of yarn or some other household material like cardboard or pipe cleaners.

Players shouldn’t let the cute set design fool them, though, because this is a challenging adventure for Yoshi and his fellow dinosaurs. And yes, there is a co-op mode, but only two can tango in this platformer.
