New title: Feeling Down? 10 Best Good News Websites to Cheer You Up
New FI:
Most news is overwhelmingly negative, and constant exposure to all the world’s problems can damage your mental health over time. I’ve reduced my consumption to the point where I hardly ever look at normal news and instead recommend sites that focus specifically on good stories.
One of the most prominent good news sites is Positive News. The organization was founded in 1993 and aims to produce independent positive news. Positive news is a quarterly magazine and online publication.
In 2015, the company launched a crowdfunding campaign called #OwnTheMedia. This turned Positive News into a co-op and essentially each of the 1,500 backers became a co-owner of Positive News. It’s an unusual model for journalism that holds a publication accountable for its vision.
The site publishes stories on a wide range of topics, including society, environment, lifestyle, science and economics. Positive News is a UK-based organization, so some stories have a more British feel, but they also cover the US and other countries. You can support positive news with a donation.
A common theme among positive news sites is their longevity, which is good news in itself. The Good News Network has been operating since 1997 and has collected an archive of more than 21,000 positive messages.
The so-called Good News Guru, Geri Weis-Corbley, has been at the helm of the site since its inception. Like Positive News, which primarily covers good news in the UK, the Good News Network has its own regional slant covering some of the best positive news in the US.
If you want to support the site, you can become a member by donating. The Good News Network is also an excellent choice for those on the go, thanks to the site’s mobile apps for Android and iOS. So to stop scrolling, open the Good News Network app instead of your regular news provider or social network.
For those who prefer their news in podcast form, they also produce the Good News Gurus Podcast. Recognizing that good news doesn’t stop at US borders, the site has an entire section dedicated to positive news from around the world. There is even a Spanish section on the website.
Unlike some positive news sites, the Good News Network is not a non-profit organization. He wants to show that it is possible to be profitable while still focusing on the positive things in life.
While other upbeat news sites tend to take a slower approach to journalism, The Optimist Daily focuses on the here and now. The site aims to “accelerate a shift in human consciousness by accelerating 100 million people to start each day with a positive solution attitude.”
The site does not aim to be an alternative to mainstream news. Rather, it wants to be a positive outlet for happy news where people can get the good news of the day.
Some of the phrases used to describe the site sound like they were taken from a new age self-help guide. But beneath the flowery language, its mission is the same as other positive news sites: spread good news today and minimize negativity.
But The Optimist Daily doesn’t just focus on good news or positive news. It also has an extensive archive of personal development tips and techniques.
Reddit is not a site that people normally associate with good or happy news. The site is more often associated with controversy for its more infamous Subreddits. However, the Uplifting News subreddit is “a place to read and share positive and uplifting feel-good news”. Since launching in 2012, the community has now grown to over 18 million.
The moderators do an excellent job of keeping the discussion focused and mostly good-natured. When things veer into less desirable territory, other users encourage each other to focus on the positive and not get into arguments.
However, if you only want to read good news, you can ignore the discussions and use the subreddit to discover positive news instead. With such a diverse membership, this site is also a great source of positive news from around the world.
If you’re new to the site, you might want to check out the best Reddit sites and apps for beginners. And despite its negativity, some think Reddit is the best social media platform around.
The Happy Newspaper is a quarterly by British writer and illustrator Emily Coxhead; was launched in 2015 after a successful Kickstarter campaign. The magazine is available by subscription and provides offline good news when you want to turn off the screens.
The messages are arranged chronologically by month, and each issue focuses on a specific topic of good news. There’s even a section called Everyday Heroes, which looks at some of the most inspiring people and organizations as nominated by readers of The Happy Newspaper.
The newspaper is available as a subscription or gift subscription and can be sent worldwide to lovers of positive news.
Upworthy can sometimes take a more negative approach than the other websites listed so far, but these sites are meant to be thought provoking rather than bad. The vast majority of articles speculate about how we can change societal issues such as teenage mental health and take a hopeful and pragmatic approach.
Upworthy also identifies funny stories, but from a place of legitimate amusement and healthy living, instead of judging others. You can find a list of trending stories on the right.
Today.com’s Good News section features positive news from everyday life, and I felt better as I scrolled down the home page and skimmed through its headlines. You’ll find wholesome stories of couples revisiting their first dates, along with plenty of articles about people doing good in the world.
If you’re looking for positive news with less of a political twist and want to take some time off from worrying about everyday issues, Today.com is an excellent resource. Combining this site with podcasts for positivity and inspiration could have a significant positive impact.
Are you interested in science and eager to learn how the world works? Happy Daze is the site for you. You’ll find plenty of unconventional stories on a wide variety of topics. For example, you can learn how plants get calcium.
The site is updated less frequently than many others on this list; however, it’s worth checking every few weeks to see if anything new has been uploaded.
While some of the posts on r/goodnews are also published on r/UpliftingNews, you’ll find a few other new stories that haven’t been covered. These stories are a mix of articles from mainstream outlets and niche sites, and the subreddit is usually updated daily.
In addition to finding stories covered online, others will share their own success stories. It’s the perfect place to get inspiration, and you may want to connect what you see with online communities for personal growth.
Only Good News Daily is a mix of stories and entertaining articles that are sure to make your day. The website has daily roundups of good news, meaning you can get an idea of what’s going on in the world before you go about your usual tasks.
I especially like Only Good News Daily when I’m short on time; it is very easy to digest. You’ll also find plenty of videos here, many of which showcase the wonders of our planet.
Even though the world has problems, it is also much more positive than you think. Despite all the bad stories you see every day, a lot of things are going well. Unfortunately, these are often not covered by major publications because they don’t sell that well. So if you’re ready to switch up your information diet, these websites are a great place to start.
