Bigger, Better, and Faster than before

Archero 2 is a roguelike single-player RPG developed by HABBY, a sequel to the popular hybrid casual RPG, Archero, and follows a new protagonist, who is a new-generation hero, who must master every skill acquired to save the world from the dark forces. And everyone’s favorite Lone Archer has fallen into the Demon King‘s trap, and turned to the dark side, now a powerful leader of evil forces. In this Archero 2 Review, I will share my impressions of this sequel and offer an honest rating.

For this review, I played Archero 2 on both Motorola G32 and iPhone 13, racking up a total of 20 hours of playtime. This allowed me to fully explore and experience everything that the game has to offer, providing me with a solid foundation for a thorough analysis. I will share my thoughts, highlighting the strengths of the game and areas where it can improve to enhance the overall gameplay experience.

Experience a similar yet refreshed gameplay and defeat the Demon King

Archero 2 introduces an exciting twist to the story, with the Lone Archer getting tricked by the Demon King, and is now your enemy instead of an ally. The game enhances the action with faster-paced gameplay, a revamped combat system, and a wealth of content, including 50 main Chapters and 1,250 floors of the Sky Tower.

I found the gameplay very fun and engaging, and it grabs your attention very quickly and can become very addictive in no time. However, you might find the game to be more challenging, as the Chapters or levels are tougher this time, as the horde of monsters increases rather quickly. You will have to be quick and select your abilities and skills wisely, or else you will find yourself repeating the same chapters until you complete them.

The good thing is the variety of skills and abilities has improved, you will still rely on good RNG to complete the chapters. There may be times, when you will end up with skills that aren’t very good to clear lots of monsters, making even the early waves and floors much more difficult to clear. I hate those Skeleton Archers, and the massive Skeleton Boss, their arrows deal way too much damage for no reason and are ridiculously quick.

Archero 2 offers a wide variety of content and various game modes

The game offers a variety of exciting game modes, including Defense Mode, where you have to clear 50 waves and face several thrilling boss battles; Survival Mode, a time-limited challenge, usually lasting around 6 to 7 minutes; and Room Mode, where you have to clear 50 floors, consisting of various monsters and Boss floors.

I spend a lot of my time on the event section, featuring Sky Tower, Arena, Seal Battle, Gold Cave, and Rune Ruins. Whenever I get stuck in a particular Chapter, I come here to clear some floors of the Sky Tower which has a total of 1250 floors. I like the challenge that it provides, as it gets tougher as you progress, for instance, from floor 26 onwards, the chance of red heart drop decreases.

This adds an extra layer of challenge and fun to the gameplay which I dig. Plus, there is a rank leaderboard to flex your rank. The Arena is decent with auto-battle, giving you a more relaxed experience and you can just sit back and climb the Arena Leaderboard. I enjoy the Seal Battle to chill out. It is a fun mode where you get 2 minutes to deal as much damage as you can to a random boss while collecting XP yourself to unlock abilities, unlike in the Chapter Modes.

Right now I am having fun beating the Cyclops Mage and there is a leaderboard even here. Gold Cave is great if you are short on coins, scrolls, or gems. It is a very simple mode with no abilities, it’s just you and your arrows. Overall, the game offers a variety of engaging modes and content that unlock as you progress, which will keep you hooked.

The game offers improved visuals, along with some improved character animations

I love all the adorable characters in the game, even though I haven’t unlocked any of them yet and I am still using the free character. I am especially excited to unlock Nyanja, the adorable cat ninja. Even the Sprites are super charming, and you can get them during your matches, like the Flame Sprite, Bomb Sprite, Poison Sprite, Lightning Sprite, Ice Sprite, Laser Sprite, and the powerful Sprite King.

Even the home screen is a treat to the eye, with its cute icons and artwork. But my favorite is the Artifact Spin screen, which is without a doubt, the most adorable part of the game. They have also added these cute adorable animations and characters for the Rune Workshop and Blacksmith. I enjoy the overall cute theme of the game, with its adorable character models, charming in-game animation, and the overall vibrant visuals that instantly capture your attention.

HABBY has done an amazing job with this sequel, the variety of monsters, Boss Battles, the Demon, the Valkyrie, the Angel, Roulette, and everything in between all look impressive and provide a nice gaming experience. In my opinion, a game’s graphics doesn’t always have to be ultra-realistic or true-to-life to be enjoyable. Instead, you can have something like this, simple yet vibrant visuals with a cute charm, that perfectly does its job to keep you engaged.

The UI and controls are simple yet well-designed

The controls and UI in Archero 2 are simple, user-friendly, and well-designed, perfectly complementing the game’s cute cartoonish art style. The interface is clean and uncluttered, making it very easy to navigate between menus, settings, and everything in between, and various features without getting overwhelmed like some games.

The icons are cutely designed, distinct, and easy to identify, ensuring easy access to important sections. For instance, you can head to the Gear section by looking at the big armor icon, where you will find your gear, characters, and runes. Similarly, you can identify the Collectible section with the large cup-like trophy icon, where you will find your Talent Cards and Artifacts.

This intuitive design makes the game even more fun, as you don’t have to waste your time focusing on complicated menus and instead, you can dive right into the fast-paced action. And as for the controls, they are pretty simple, dragging your cursor moves your character, stand still to shoot, and drag around to move and dodge various monsters and their attacks, giving you an addictive and casual gameplay experience.

IAPs tempt you to make your aim better with gears and gift packs

Archero 2 has in-game monetization with a pay-to-win approach, which could encourage you to spend your money to get an extra advantage. The game features items that you can purchase to have an upper hand, including Chapter Gift Packs, special booster packs, Diamonds, and three Newbie Packs. The shop also offers three types of Gear Chests ie Silver, Obsidian, and Chromatic Chest, which will tempt you to spin for better gears.

Gear is vital in this game, and high-tier gears are even better, as they have better stats and passives. You can obtain even S-Tier Epic gear which will help you clear the Chapters more easily. Additionally, you can also wish for Artifacts, and purchase daily, weekly, or even monthly special packs. As if all these weren’t enough, you can also a battle pass to make your journey easier.

You can either buy the Advanced or the Luxury Pass, offering various valuable rewards such as coins, diamonds, chest keys, ruin shovels, gear scrolls, artifact shards, and wish coins. You do get a lot of these items for free by watching Ads, from the free pass and other mini-events. While I am enjoying this game, it does push you toward purchasing different packs and items as you progress, especially with the expensive booster packs.

That being said, you can still play without spending a dime like I am doing, but you will need to invest a lot of time to clear all the Chapter and Sky Tower floors. One thing, I do like is the option to buy the Permanent Ad-Free Card, which gives you an ad-free gameplay experience along with extra daily free diamonds. There are lots of other purchasable cards too, but you play just fine without them.

Final Verdict

Archero 2 is a hybrid casual RPG that packs roguelike challenges, diverse game modes, and a variety of features, delivering an engaging and exciting gameplay experience. Just like its predecessor, the game quickly becomes addictive.

However, it may take some time for old fans to transition, as they have already invested a lot of time and money into the original game. Archero 2 also features numerous gears, runes, characters, and other upgrades, which will require additional time and money. That said, Archero 2 is worth trying, as it has improved in nearly every aspect, bringing even more excitement and fun.
