Harry Potter has made many amazing friends over the years as a student of Hogwarts, and some have even saved his life.

Throughout the films and books of Harry Potter, numerous healing spells are used to aid wizards in the healing of others, with many being used by Harry and his friends during their years at Hogwarts.

1 Counter-Curse For Hiccoughs

Although the spell’s name is unknown, the counter-curse for hiccoughs is a counter-charm used to remove the effects of hiccoughs on a person. In the book Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger discuss the counter-curse for hiccoughs when examining their O.W.L. results.

With Hiccoughing Solution being a potion that can make targeted people fall victim to hiccoughs, the counter-curse is a spell that can provide a way to neutralize its effects. Although the spell has never been shown or said to have been used in the movies, its existence establishes the spell as a simple but effective counter-charm that prevents hiccoughs from occurring.

2 Ferula

The Bandaging Charm

Ferula is considered a beneficial spell for healing, even for everyday occurrences. Ferula is a spell that places bandages around a person’s wounded area, applying pressure, which is often found to relieve pain. The spell is most widely known through Remus Lupin, who used the spell on Ron to ease the pain of his broken leg at the Shrieking Shack in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

The only other occurrence of the spell being used is when Madam Poppy Pomfrey teaches Ferula to Jacob’s sibling at Hogwarts, years before Harry and his friends arrive.

3 Episkey

Heals Minor Injuries Such As Broken Noses

For treating injuries perceived as more tolerable, such as broken noses or cuts, Episkey is often used when dealing with such injuries. Episkey has been documented to have been used frequently, although its most famous use is by the hand of Luna Lovegood in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. When Harry goes to spy on Draco Malfoy on the Hogwarts train, he receives a broken nose courtesy of his archnemesis.

4 Brackium Emendo

The Healing Of Broken Bones

Brackium Emendo is a spell used to fix a broken bone in a person’s body. In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, after Harry breaks his arm during a quidditch match, the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Gilderoy Lockhart, quickly tries to aid Harry with the Brackium Emendo spell, performed using his wand.

Although seemingly confident in performing the spell, Lockhart fails, causing Harry’s arm to lose all its bones, leaving the arm lifeless. If executed properly, Harry’s broken bones in his arm would have been fixed, reducing the amount of time he would have to recover.

Anapneo is a healing spell or charm that is often used when a person is choking. When used, the spell clears any objects stuck in a person’s throat, stopping any choking from occurring. The most famous use of Anapneo is performed by Horace Slughorn, who uses the spell on Ravenclaw student Marcus Belby.

When Marcus begins to choke on food after eating too fast, Slughorn uses his wand to perform the spell to remove the food. Despite its lack of grandeur as a spell, Anapneo is highly effective and essential for wizards to learn.

When Dumbledore attempts to consume the Drink of Despair, Harry uses the spell to revive his mentor as he struggles to deal with the effects of the drink.

7 Vulnera Sanentur

The Half-Blood Prince’s Own Healing Spell

Vulnera Sanentur is a counter-curse to Sectumsempra, an offensive curse that inflicts severe damage onto a target, often leading to serious hemorrhaging. Vulnera Sanentur is the healing spell that counteracts the effects of Sectumsempra, healing any hemorrhaging or wounded areas that have been affected. The spell itself was conjured by Severus Snape, who came up with Sectumsempra and its counter-curse while still a student at Hogwarts. Snape’s methods are found to be documented in the study book Harry finds belonging to the Half-Blood Prince.

When Harry uses Sectumsempra to attack Malfoy in one of the Hogwarts bathrooms, Snape arrives in time to use Vulnera Sanentur to heal Malfoy and reverse the effects of Harry’s attack.
