5 ways you can use Google Maps that don’t plan a route
Key things
- Use Google Maps to avoid the crowds and plan your visits efficiently.
- Improve your business visibility by managing your Google Maps listing.
- Improve road safety by reporting accidents and checking hazards in real time.
While Google Maps is undeniably great for navigation, it’s a fantastic resource with many wider uses that can help you beyond just getting from A to B. Here are five creative and practical ways I’ve used Google Maps to improve my work and lifestyle.
1 Explore places to avoid crowds and inconveniences
I like to avoid crowds whenever possible, and if you’re like me and considering shopping or visiting an interesting place, it pays to check Google Maps first. With real-time data and user input, you can explore popular spots and locations to see when they’re likely to be busiest.
Whenever you’re looking for a quieter time to visit, tapping the “Busy Area” label will bring up a chart that tells you the most popular time of day for that location. The information also includes a directory of nearby shops and recreational areas and will tell you when the roads are most congested, saving you time and frustration, especially during rush hour or holiday periods.
2 Improve your business presence
Almost all businesses today require an online presence, and Google Maps can play a vital role in improving your visibility. By claiming and updating your Google My Business listing, you can ensure your business appears on the map when potential customers search for products or services like yours.
With a My Business listing on Google Maps, you can showcase your business hours, post updates, and even highlight special events. Reviews are also a vital part of your business’s success, and Google Maps allows customers to create positive reviews that will then appear on your listing. When I was a small business owner, positive reviews helped drive traffic, and responding to reviews allowed me to show potential customers that I cared about their experience.
3 Report accidents and road hazards
While I’ve found it’s not as effective as Waze for traffic updates, Google Maps is still a valuable resource for staying safe wherever you’re on the road. If I’m driving and encounter an accident, danger or traffic jam, I tap the “Report” icon and report it directly in the app. By doing so, I help others avoid the same delays or dangers. If enough people report the same problem, Google will update its traffic information in real time, so the whole community will benefit.
You can also follow live updates on road safety, road closures and even speed measurements on Google Maps. This feature can help you plan your route to avoid accidents or dangerous conditions, making your journey safer and more efficient. It often saved me considerable time by avoiding hazards and traffic jams.
4 Explore the location of the real estate listing
If you’re looking for a home or just interested in real estate for sale or rent in a specific area, Google Maps can help you get a better idea of the location and neighborhood. Instead of relying on still photos or descriptions in real estate listings, you can tour the area virtually with Street View. This allows you to see not only the property, but also the surrounding streets, parks, schools and other basic amenities.
You can also use Google Maps to check emergency services, traffic conditions and proximity to public transport hubs, giving you a more comprehensive view of the area. This can be especially helpful if you are moving to a new city or looking for a home in an unfamiliar location.
5 Keep up with weather alerts and natural disasters
Google Maps isn’t just for navigating the physical world; it’s also great for monitoring what’s going on in your environment. If you’re traveling to a new area or live in a weather-prone area like I do, Google Maps can help you stay informed about weather conditions and natural disasters. For example, during a hurricane, earthquake, or flood, you can tap the “Crisis” icon on Google Maps to see live updates, evacuation routes, and emergency shelters.
Additionally, weather layers can provide real-time weather data such as thunderstorm warnings, temperature and precipitation levels, making it easier to prepare for changing conditions. This feature is especially useful when you need to quickly decide on your route or destination.
Even as an iOS user, Google Maps remains one of my favorite apps and offers much more than just directions. Whether you’re trying to avoid the crowds, find the perfect home, boost your business or stay informed about the weather, Google’s free app can dramatically improve your lifestyle, offering convenience and safety at your fingertips.
